A Thousand Lives: ‘we were down by the shore when the skies opened up’ -rface

you could live a thousand lives among this one
and with most you wouldn’t notice when you’d rise or die
no more than you might notice that the sun also sets as it climbs,
the way you sleep through those wonders shielded by blinds
when what is sacred has become the iterated mundane
of what’s been done becoming what is always expected,
and yet a few mornings, remembered, as a few evenings, cherished,
carried from this life to the next,
that the struggle is to determine what we keep as we grow
and to know which of what we brought with us is best to let go.
