saunterings | essays, poems, and remarks, lost with purpose

Saunterings Logo

Though the first writings here are dated to 2006, some existed on a blog dating as far back as late 2004 before it was shut down. This 20 year project has morphed with time. I’ve closed and reopened the website repeatedly. I’ve had long seasons of endless writing, coupled with bouts of silence.

I don’t endorse everything I’ve said, because thankfully, I’ve changed over the years, and that’s precisely what I wanted this writing project to be, a documentation of that change. I don’t always get things right; I write precisely because I’m an incredibly broken person, and I wanted a path to reflecting on that – my own brokenness and the brokenness of the world we’ve inherited.

I named this project saunterings because that’s what it was: a sacred walk through the woods of a broken life. Coming out of seminary, and moving to Morocco, sauntering was something I felt I was physically doing. Working in nonprofits and in human rights, I felt I was still doing it, yet differently than I had planned. Today, in these immensely dark times, my saunterings are an attempt to channel some of what’s going on my head in the small hope that if you are feeling the same, we might find community together. I hope to reclaim a creative side I’ve neglected and do more to wax poetic a bit.

The contents and commentary found here are solely my own, do not reflect any positions of the organization(s) and association(s) which I have belonged to, past, present, or future, and they don’t always reflect any stance I currently hold either.

Thank you and happy reading.

  2. Thanks for the comment! uhm, I don’t think I have any questions at the moment, but if you see something on my packing list, and you’re like, “Oh dude, don’t bring that; bad idea,” then definitely let me know! :)

  3. Hi Philip- Thank you for this thoughtful blog about Morocco. I finally have an idea of what I’ll be doing the next two years. I particularly appreciated the pictures of your apartment. Have an idea of the details is really helpful in alleviating anxiety and gathering my energy.

    yours,

    1. hey, thanks for the thoughts. I need to sit with them and think about it. my old blog was heavy on the pictures. I wanted the focus on this blog to be my writing. I think the biggest problem with this format is how skinny the blog is. if it were three columns instead of four, that would free me up more space to occasionally include some pictures every here & there, but I’m not sure how to delete a column or how to widen the main one. thoughts?
